Tree Felling and Tree Removal Needs?
There are several ways our tree surgeons can remove a tree
Tree felling (also known as Tree Cutting) is that ideal scenario where there are nothing and nobody in the area that could be impacted by a full tree's felling.
The norm, though, is that the tree or trees are surrounded by housing, roads, fences, railways, etc. In this instance, "section felling" is performed where we remove a section at a time, slowly and safely, until we are down at ground level.
Once safely down, we chop and chip the tree and take it off the site. Should you wish to retain the tree in the shape of pre cut logs then for an additional cost, we can chop the tree to size for you. Please note only parts of the tree will be suitable for logs, so chipping and or removal will still be required.
A couple of things to note.
1) We cannot cut a tree down if birds or bats inhabit it. Only when the tree is vacated can we commence the tree cutting service
2) If there is any doubt about the tree being removed, the local authority should grant permission to remove it. There may be a preservation order or similar. If you gain approval prior to us attending, it could save you time and money. Should you require assistance in submitting your request, we can help.
Sometimes trees have to be brought down. It's an unfortunate fact. To ease our conscience, we have decided to plant two trees for every one we cut down. It's good for sustainability and the environment.
Perhaps some Tree Surgery?
Tree Surgery is a catch-all term that could include one or many types of tree maintenance below :
Crown Lifting
Most of the growth takes place in the upper crown of a tree, and thus crown lifting, removal of some lower branches results in the following :
- Increased light for your property or any plants and shrubs below
- Easier access to footpaths, roads, etc
- Additional clearance from overhead lines etc
It should be noted that, for the health of the tree, a full investigation should be carried out prior. Older mature trees, for example, should rarely be lifted. Similarly, care needs to be taken when larger branches are removed, which could affect the balance, health, and look of the tree.
Crown Thinning
Crown thinning the canopy of a tree is the recognised method to improve its health and aesthetics.
The benefits of crown thinning include :
- Increased light to your property and garden
- Allow further for wind to flow through the canopy (less resistance)
- Reduced load on the tree
There are instances where crown thinning is not recommended, for example. the tree has root issues, and here we would look at a crown reduction.
Crown Reduction
For shaping and crown reduction, specific methods are used when the tree requires the height or spread reduced. We use selective pruning techniques that are determined by the species of the tree.
Reducing the size and weight of the tree makes the tree stronger in adverse weather conditions.
At West Lothian Tree Surgeons, we will advise on the best possible way to reduce or shape the crown, which will meet your needs and the tree's health requirements.
Deadwooding
Dead wooding is vital in any tree to remove the hazard of possible injury to someone or potential damage to property. It is also essential for the tree's health. We concentrate on dead, broken, or diseased branches and decayed and structurally weak limbs.

Stump Removal? What's the Best Way?
There are many ways to remove those pesky tree stumps.
- The manual, intensive, and prolonged way. -
Not always successful if the tree roots are long, strong, and deep.
- The poisonous way. - (Stump Killer, Root Tree Killer, etc.)
Not something we recommend due to environmental issues but certainly something we can advise on
- Using a Stump Grinder -
Our preferred and recommended choice for tree stump removal
Our team has access to the most current range of Stump Grinding machines, including small machines able to access confined areas and with narrow access. Using the machines, we can speedily remove the offending stumps allowing your land to be returned to planting or re-landscaping. This also eliminates any trip hazards or areas that could damage any garden machinery.
It takes a long time for a tree stump to rot away on its own. Sometimes fresh roots appear, and it starts to grow all over again. More usual, it will become infested with rodents and pests and could potentially be infected by a disease, the most common being honey fungus. Removing the stump has many advantages.
Hedge Cutting and Trimming Required?
There's nothing quite like a garden that has well maintained and trimmed hedging. It gives beautiful framing to the rest of the garden.
We provide a breadth of hedge cutting and hedge trimming services. Our experienced and professional team takes great pride in meeting or surpassing your requirements. We offer competitive prices, which we stick to, as we know this helps you to plan your budget.
Hedge removal
Should your hedge or hedging be dangerous in that it's obstructing traffic sightlines or growing in areas that it shouldn't, we can undoubtedly advise if removal is the best way forward. If removal is indeed the solution, we can quickly remove the offending area leaving you with a canvas you can work on.
Hedge cutting and Hedge Trimming Services
We have multiple regular hedge maintenance customers where the tree is either too tall or too long a boundary for them to keep under control. We are sure they have better things to do with their time. Our services include pruning, reshaping, or thinning to make the hedging so much more attractive.
Conifer cutting and Conifer Trimming Services
Conifers are great for privacy and blocking noise, but you don't want them getting out of control or taking away light from neighbours.
Conifer (coniferous) cutting, trimming, and shaping can make such a difference. Proper maintenance of conifers (and others in the conifer family) means there is more chance to retain its natural colour and beauty while keeping its size under control.
Common Questions for our West Lothian Tree Surgeons.
How much does a tree surgeon charge?
A: A typical cost for tree surgery is between £400 and £600 a day dependent on materials and equipment required. You are paying them for their experience, their qualifications and training, their willing to take calculated risks with trees that could physically damage them and much more.
What is a tree surgeon?
Why are tree surgeons so expensive?
A: On top of that answered above, there are normally one or more staff to assist the tree surgeon. Then you have to take into consideration the training costs, insurance costs, membership costs etc.
How much does it cost to have a large tree removed?
A: This depends on the area where the tree is located, how much space is around it, if anything can be damaged etc. If it can be taken down in one piece then it's obviously cheaper than having to remove in sections. The average costs can be in the £600 to £800 area but this all depends on circumstances and whether the tree needs to be removed from site or chipped or cut into roundels. Also whether the stump needs removed too!! So many factors
